BRITISH POLICE HISTORY

A good working knowledge of British Police History is a must for any collector of British Police Memorabilia. Bobby Helmet BadgeWhen I first began to try to research and verify some of my collection pieces I was very disappointed by the lack of convenient resource material in the United States. Thanks to my membership in the Police Insignia Collectors Association (PICA) of Great Britain I soon discovered a wealth of information (See my Links Page to access PICA). Many British Police forces have either official, or unofficial, historians who have written a force history account....often these publications include invaluable photographs. Also, a number of British Police forces now have museum and/or history pages; use my "Links" page to find some of these, or go to one of the better search engines and search on the words "police museum" .... good hunting!

Probably the best sources of British Police History resources are book stores/dealers who specialize in old/used books .... obviously, the better finds will be made in Great Britain. Over the years I have found several stores/dealers who maintain excellent stocks and who are glad to deal by mail. As time/space permits I will provide a listing of recommended stores/dealers.

Many of the available resource books are not pure "history" books. From 1900 through the `50s there were hundreds of biographies and autobiographies written by or about notable British police officers (usually detectives and chief constables). In addition, since the British public have always been avid true crime readers, there were hundreds (if not thousands) of books written about notable British crime cases. Many of these true crime books focus on the investigators and their police agency and some even include photographs.
